Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine (with Honours)

SA

Hi, I’m Flic, and I’m currently in my first year of a Bachelor’s degree in Laboratory Medicine with Honours at the University of South Australia, City East Campus. I am a queer person of colour who has grown up on Kaurna country in South Australia. I’m passionate about studying science and the human body as I want to help alleviate the burden of disease and make a positive impact, especially after seeing my mother overcome breast cancer. Becoming a qualified medical laboratory scientist will enable me to conduct research and diagnostic techniques, contributing to improving disease diagnosis, management, and treatment.

Being queer and a person of colour has come with obstacles in terms of representation, acknowledgement, and inclusivity. However, these experiences have instilled me with empathy and compassion. This compelled me to start an LGBTQIA+ youth group in high school, ensuring that every young person under my care understood that they possess extraordinary perspectives and skills.

I’m deeply appreciative of the generous support from BHP and The Pinnacle Foundation for awarding me this scholarship. This contribution will provide me with the necessary resources, encouragement, and opportunity to pursue my passion in making a meaningful impact on society through laboratory sciences.
