The Bill Chambers Scholarship for 2020 has been awarded to Renae Papalexiou (born in 1994, from Queensland). Renae will enter into their final year of their Masters of Teaching (Secondary) at Queensland University of Technology, having earlier completed a Science degree. They are the first in Family to attend university.

Renae is determined to use their skills and passion to work towards becoming a beacon of change within the education system and the world, “I want to make change… and I will.”  

Renae achieved solid academic results for 2019 and gained Credits and Distinctions. In 2019 they also undertook a Certificate II in Auslan which not only allowed them to gain basic conversational skills in Auslan for the classroom but has also allowed them to create a more inclusive environment for any students that are hearing impaired.

In terms of community engagement Renae is an activist on campus via Queensland University of Technology’s Queer Collective with their campaigns for Marriage Equality and Pride events.
