Medicine

NSW

Hello! My name is Mikhayla and I am very excited to be starting my first year of my Doctor of Medicine at the University of Sydney in 2021. I’m located at the Nepean Clinical School based at Nepean Hospital in Penrith where I will attend one day a week with the other days of the week spent at the University of Sydney Campus at Camperdown. After working as a Registered Nurse for two years I am thrilled that I am able to pursue my childhood dream of becoming a Doctor; my experiences working in neonatal and paediatric intensive care units has helped guide me down this pathway and I currently hope to pursue a career as a combined adult and paediatric intensivist. I am sure that all the areas of medicine I am exposed to over the next four years will help me to figure out if that is what I truly want to do and I am more than open to the idea that my career aspirations will probably change a lot!

The reason I decided to pursue a career in the health industry is due to a number of factors, most notably my time recovering from my own injuries as an Officer in the Australian Regular Army and also due to my experiences being my mother’s primary carer when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer when I was a teenager. Although I have loved being a registered nurse, I have craved something more from my very first day – being surrounded by doctors who were supportive and encouraging to my further aspirations gave me the nudge I needed to apply.
