Brendan (he/him)

Doctor of Medicine - Griffith University

Virgin Australia Scholarship, QLD

My name is Brendan, and I will be commencing the Doctor of Medicine program at Griffith University in 2026. I am currently completing my Bachelor of Medical Science on the Sunshine Coast; a place I have grown to call home after moving here from Brisbane.

Studying medicine has always been my dream. For me, medicine is not just about treating illness—it is about being a supportive voice on someone’s most difficult day. As the son of Vietnamese refugees and the first in my family to attend university, I have seen firsthand the positive impact of compassionate healthcare.

I am passionate about rural healthcare and aspire to work as a rural general practitioner or generalist. I also have a growing interest in medical education. Currently, I serve as President of the Health Society at UniSC, where I lead a team dedicated to creating opportunities for health students to connect and develop professionally.

I applied for a Pinnacle Foundation scholarship not only for financial support but also for the mentorship program. Having grown up with very few queer people around me, I am eager to connect with mentors and peers who understand the unique challenges and strengths that come with being LGBTQIA+ in healthcare.

I am incredibly honoured to receive the Virgin Australia Scholarship through The Pinnacle Foundation. With this support, I hope to make the most of my medical training and contribute meaningfully to both the LGBTQIA+ community and the future of rural medicine in Australia.
