Breeanna (she/they)

PhD in Psychology - Curtin University

Olrem Scholarship, WA

I studied psychology as my undergraduate degree and enjoyed my honours research so much I followed it up with a Master of Research (Psychology) where I looked at the safety behaviours of queer individuals. In 2025, I am now beginning a four-year doctorate in 2025 at Curtin University, Bentley.

I grew up in small mining towns across the country. I was born in a small town called Charters Towers in regional Queensland before moving to Paraburdoo, WA when I was 2 years old. From there we went back to Queensland, this time to a little town called Clermont. We eventually move to the outskirts of Perth (the city version of a small town).

In terms of my proudest achievements: I am the first in my immediate family to study at University, let alone obtain a postgraduate degree. I am passionate about the rights, safety, and general wellbeing of my community and have had a number of roles where I have been able to make a positive contribution. For example, I have volunteered and then worked as a queer peer educator since 2019 where I was recently promoted to senior peer educator. Additionally as part of my studies so far, my research has been focussing on queer voices and experiences. I currently have a paper that has been accepted for publication at a journal on these topics.

I want to keep working with, and for, my community, I believe there is so many amazing individuals that make up the vibrant tapestry that is the LGBTQIA+ community and I want to do my part to make sure we are all supported and heard. I would like to thank Jess Bastow for providing a scholarship that can support me while I am completing my studies.
