Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine - University of New England
Duncan Peerman & Paul Zahra Scholarship, NSW
Hello! I am Adam Nguyen, currently two years into a medical degree at the University of New England. I am honored to be the recipient of The Duncan Peerman & Paul Zahra Scholarship. Medicine has been a natural calling to me as I love assisting those who are underprivileged and/or othered.
Coming to Australia as an immigrant and person of colour (POC), navigating my bisexuality alongside cultural expectations has made me understand the grief of being othered and hence want to help people find belonging wherever they are.
So far, I am proud that I have been able to work locally and nationally to advance LGBTQIA+ rights. Locally I am co-leading a ‘Queering the medical curriculum’ in my medical school to better help future doctors treat the queer community. Nationally, I am the Queer Australian Medical Student Association chair, representing 18,500 medical students throughout Australia. I have been able to liaise and advocate with the Australian Medical Association ( AMA), specialty colleges, medical societies and Australian Medical Council (AMC) on how we can create safety and champion inclusivity through policy, curriculum and media releases.
Most of all I am proud that I can be out as a queer POC leader to my peers and future patients! I have a great interest in medical education, public health and advocacy so I hope I can find the right state for me after my degree.
I also have a great interest in birds of all nature so maybe I can take headshots with some birds when I am more accomplished!
